Sweetie was seriously annoyed by the latest antics of Sun TV. He’s written this letter to the editor of a local newspaper. I asked if he would mind if I posted it here as well.
I read with interest the reports that SUN TV had staged an immigration ceremony using more than half a dozen flag-waving public civil servants even though it had the option of actually televising a real ceremony. Not surprising from a network that makes it up as it goes.
I think this was a brave move and I see other broadcast possibilities. How about staging a huge parade in Ottawa complete with shiny new F-35 Jets and floats carrying the Conservative cabinet and the Great Leader, Stephen Harper? Or how about a staged event where the Great Leader takes us on a tour of glittering new and massive Super Jails. And it doesn’t have to stop there! Heck no. How about a new Canadian drama series, “Finding Peter?” Each week the brave souls of Canadian Search and Rescue will attempt a daring rescue of Peter McKay from known and less well-known Canadian vacation spots. We can witness Peter being pulled from the hot tub in Banff Springs, or from a fishing charter off the Coast of Nova Scotia.
For months now SUN TV has, mostly through the bleating of a minimally watched host, referred to CBC as the “state broadcaster.” At first I thought it could be an attempt by SUN to marginalize CBC and drive it out of existence. I now realize the plot was much more clever. What it was actually doing was saying look at them, don’t look at us…the real state broadcaster.
